On the other hand, it behooves us to remember that these men and women who are making these laws are sinners, caught in the snare of the devil and blinded by the god of this world. God has mercy and He holds out and extends His offer of mercy to these men and women just as He does to us. Think of the example of Ahab and Manasseh. They were both perhaps the most wicked kings Israel ever had. In fact
Manasseh was the one who filled Jerusalem with innocent blood which God would not pardon. (See II Kings 24:4) Yet, both these kings humbled themselves before God. When God saw their humility before Him, He extended His mercy to them and withheld His hand of judgment for a time.
When we look at these men and women in leadership who are doing these wicked things, do we remember that God said, “1I exhort therefore, that, first of all, supplications, prayers, intercessions, and giving of thanks, be made for all men; 2For kings, and for all that are in authority; that we may lead a quiet and peaceable life in all godliness and honesty. 3For this is good and acceptable in the sight of God our Saviour; 4Who will have all men to be saved, and to come unto the knowledge of the truth.” (I Timothy 2:1-3) God would have even these people to be saved and to come unto the knowledge of the truth. When they do, it will help us to lead quiet and peaceable lives in all godliness and honesty. Remember, Jesus shed His blood for each of these people. Each of them was worth the same price we are – the blood of Jesus. “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.” (John 3:16) Do we remember that God loves each of these people? Have we prayed for them? What have we done to show them Christ’s love? If they were to look at us and at our Facebook statuses, would they know God loves them? Or would they think He must hate them? Would they know there is a God in heaven who gave His only begotten son for them? What can we do about it? Could we start praying for them? Could we ask God to help us find a way to show them that, although what they have done is a grievous sin in God’s sight, God still loves them? His mercy and salvation is still available to them? Perhaps we could start by finding out their names and praying for them. We could start right out with praying for Governor Cuomo of New York and Governor Northam of Virginia today. Pray for them to know about Jesus and to be saved because He died for them and loves them too. Then pray for others in leadership until God begins to change hearts one by one.
