Whom Should We Love?
Family. We should love our family.
I John 4:7 says, “Beloved, let us love one another: for love is of God; and every one that loveth is born of God, and knoweth God.”
The Bible has various examples of people showing love to their family members.
Abraham showed his love for Lot by pleading with the Lord to spare Sodom and Gomorrah if the Lord would find ten righteous in those cities. Abraham knew that Lot was living there, and he loved Lot. God did destroy Sodom and Gomorrah, but He delivered Lot.
Isaac took Rebekah into his mother’s tent, and he loved her. She must have been a good wife. In loving her, he was comforted after his mother’s death. Isaac gave Rebekah love, and Rebekah gave him comfort.
King David showed his love for his son, which was born to him by Bathsheba, by praying and fasting for him when his son was sick. Although his son did die, King David showed what it means to love one’s child.
Proverbs 17:17b says, “A brother is born for adversity.” This does not mean a brother is born to cause adversity but that a brother is to be there in time of adversity. I John 3:17 says, “But whoso hath this world's good, and seeth his brother have need, and shutteth up his bowels of compassion from him, how dwelleth the love of God in him?” The context in this chapter refers mainly to Christian brothers in Christ but can be applied to our personal family or even to someone we see that is in real need.
We should love our family because this love is an expression of God’s love that should dwell in our hearts if we are believers in Christ Jesus. Lord, help me to show forth Your love today and every day.
