These candidates are desiring positions of authority and working hard toward that goal. We don't know at this point which one will get elected. Even though some seem farther ahead than others, any of them could be elected. Are we afraid of certain ones getting elected? Why? Are we afraid some of them might be oppressive? Do we disagree with where some of them stand from a Biblical perspective? God can change them. God asked Israel why they had "feared continually every day because of the fury of the oppressor, as if he were ready to destroy? and where is the fury of the oppressor?" He assured Israel, "I am the LORD thy God, that divided the sea, whose waves roared: The LORD of hosts is his name." (From Isaiah 51:13,15)
What if the candidate is really wicked? What if he or she has destructive ends in mind and wants to break down America’s liberty and build up that which is wrong and cast truth down to the ground? God can change even that. Remember Ahab? He was the most wicked king that Israel had. He called Elijah, God’s prophet, the enemy and accused Elijah of troubling Israel. He allowed his wife Jezebel to do dreadful things to take away Naboth’s vineyard, for no other reason than that he wanted that vineyard.
But.
There came a day when Ahab heard the words of God’s judgment against him and his household, and “when Ahab heard those words… he rent his clothes, and put sackcloth upon his flesh, and fasted, and lay in sackcloth, and went softly. 28And the word of the LORD came to Elijah the Tishbite, saying, 29Seest thou how Ahab humbleth himself before me? because he humbleth himself before me, I will not bring the evil in his days: but in his son's days will I bring the evil upon his house.”
God has a desire even for the wicked, even for the most evil of evil people, to repent and turn to Him. He says, “6Seek ye the LORD while he may be found, call ye upon him while he is near: 7Let the wicked forsake his way, and the unrighteous man his thoughts: and let him return unto the LORD, and he will have mercy upon him; and to our God, for he will abundantly pardon. 8For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways, saith the LORD. 9For as the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways, and my thoughts than your thoughts.” (Isaiah 55:6-9)
It is OK to expose those who have evil designs for our nation and to do as much as we can to try to keep them from getting into office. But wouldn’t it be even more wonderful if they were changed and were righteous instead of evil? Do we really believe God can change them? Do we ask Him to change them? Do we spend more time tearing down those with evil designs than we do petitioning the God of Heaven to change them; or, if they refuse to be changed, for God to remove them out of the way?
Oh, how we must needs pray for our nation, its leaders, and its potential leaders!
