According to L. A. Williams of The Christian Action League, "Last year ended with a flurry of news analyses regarding the nation’s first major tax overhaul since 1986. As most Americans struggled to figure out how the new rules would affect their personal finances, few realized the legislation would strike a blow against churches and other nonprofits, causing many of the organizations to deal with taxes for the first time in history."
Click here to read the full article. This is a serious problem. Besides churches, it also affects hospitals, the elderly and veterans and people with permanent disability who are able to file for tax credits, and pretty much any charitable organization. Just about anything (such as parking or other privileges) that these organizations and people could once get tax exemptions for are now taxable. This could cost churches, non-profit organizations, the elderly, disabled veterans, and permanently disabled people large amounts of money that many of them would not be able to pay. This was an "obscure provision tucked deep within a massive budget bill." However, our lawmakers should not be excused for not reading it. When this takes effect, perhaps all non-profits should close down for one month -- a kind of modern day “tea party.” Even one week might be long enough to have an effect. It is time to start doing something and standing up against these unconstitutional measures. We do not need “greater parity” between for-profit and non-profit organizations. They are supposed to be different. At the very least, I hope folks, especially these organizations, will express their concern and disagreement to Congress. When Nehemiah was governor in Jerusalem, the people were in distress and going through difficult times. Their leaders put undo taxes and burdens on them. Nehemiah had strong words for those leaders. “Restore, I pray you, to them, even this day, their lands, their vineyards, their oliveyards, and their houses, also the hundredth part of the money, and of the corn, the wine, and the oil, that ye exact of them… Also I shook my lap, and said, So God shake out every man from his house, and from his labour, that performeth not this promise, even thus be he shaken out, and emptied.” (See Nehemiah 5:11&13) God will judge unfair leaders; but people have to speak out. Nehemiah pointed out the problem to the leaders, and they agreed to do right instead of the wrong they had been doing. Here is another troubling thing. Where are those that are supposed to be Christians among our lawmakers? Why did they not say something about this provision that was tacked on to the legislation? The fact that the legislation was long and “tucked in there somewhere” is not an excuse. If our lawmakers would take some time to read all the way through some of the proposed legislation, maybe so many useless or bad legislations would not be passed. Way too many bills are passed; and our lawmakers do not even know what has been sneaked into some of them. Maybe it’s time to vote in some new lawmakers. It should not just be up to Trump to “clean house.” Maybe it’s time for voters to do it too. |

My people ask counsel at their stocks, and their staff declareth unto them: for the spirit of whoredoms hath caused them to err, and they have gone a whoring from under their God. Hosea 4:12
