A very sad day has come upon America. Sunday was the tenth anniversary of 9/11. There were many gatherings to honour the heroes of our country on that day. But, in some places, people were forbidden to pray in Jesus’ name at these gatherings and were told that this is “unconstitutional.” No, it is not unconstitutional. If someone says it is, they are wrong. There is a copy of the constitution available in the sidebar. One can look through it but will search in vain for anything that forbids prayer in Jesus’ name at a public gathering. On the contrary, we ought to fear if we do not praise the name of the God who saved our nation.
A desire has been expressed by some to build a mosque near ground zero. Are we, as a country, not going to allow a cross, a monument to the God who saved us, to be built at ground zero; but rather allow a mosque, a monument to the false god of those who tried to destroy us to be built there instead? It is interesting that, in other parts of the world, Muslims built mosques at places in people’s countries where they had conquered those people. We believe we won a victory in overcoming that attack. However, it must be remembered that about 3,000 people gave their lives in this tragedy. Every year we have a day of remembrance and morning for these people. As we do, are the leaders of those who attacked us having a day of celebration for one victory?
Oh, how we ought to fear God and be humble before Him as was our first President, George Washington, who prayed the following, in Jesus’ name.
A Prayer for Our Country
Almighty God, who has given us this good land for our heritage, we humbly beseech Thee that we may always prove ourselves a people mindful of Thy favor and glad to do Thy will.
Bless our land with honorable industry, sound learning, and pure manners.
Save us from violence, discord and confusion; from pride and arrogancy, and from every evil way.
Defend our liberties, and fashion us into one united people, the multitudes brought out of many kindreds and tongues.
Endue with the spirit of wisdom those whom for Thy name we entrust the authority of government, that there may be peace and justice at home, and that through obedience, by Thy law, we may show forth Thy praise among the people of the earth.
In the time of prosperity, fill our hearts with Spirit fullness, and in the day of trouble, suffer not our trust in Thee to fail.
All of which we ask through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
“Thus saith the LORD, Stand ye in the ways, and see, and ask for the old paths, where is the good way, and walk therein, and ye shall find rest for your souls.” (Jeremiah 6:16a)
