At this time, North Carolina is in a critical period, getting ready to vote on an amendment for the state constitution that would cause it to read, “Marriage between a man and a woman is the only domestic legal union that shall be valid and recognized in this State.” We pray that this measure will pass and urge North Carolina voters to get out and vote for it.
Many people oppose this amendment and have written articles against it, like this one by Skip Foster, publisher of the The Star, newspaper for Shelby, NC. They fear it will bring about a theocracy or oppression by the merging of church and state. In reality, it would bring freedom. God’s standards always bring freedom, for it is God’s way that will loose the bands of wickedness, undo the heavy burdens, let the oppressed go free, and break every yoke. (See Isaiah 58:6)
God has ordained that marriage be between one man and one woman. He has no other plan for the reproduction of mankind. No other union can produce children or build strong families, communities, or nations.
Some argue that those who urge others to vote for this measure are wanting to oppress them with their use of Scripture. Scripture is oppressive to those who do not believe. It is as if they “take counsel together, against the LORD, and against his anointed, saying , Let us break their bands asunder, and cast away their cords from us.” (Psalm 2:2b,3) The Bible says that the wicked hate instruction and cast His words behind them. (See Psalm 50:17)
Some argue that passing this law would be a danger because it would go against the separation of church and state. However, the separation of church and state is not the same thing as the separation of God and government. Our founding fathers desired to see a country in which the government would not recognize a certain church as the “established church” and cause all citizens to attend that church. However, they never tried to take God out of government. One need only look through the sayings of our founding fathers and early leaders to see that they recognized God’s authority and providence in their leadership and in this country. A copy of the constitution is available for free download in the side bar. Look through it carefully. You will not find the words “separation of church and state” anywhere in that document, nor in any other founding documents of our country.
Upholding God’s standard as the right standard is not the same as merging church and state. God’s standard for marriage was given at creation, long before the church even existed. It was repeated in God’s word at various times in history. Here are just a few passages to consider – Genesis 1:27-28; Genesis 2:24; Leviticus 18:22-30; Proverbs 19:14; Matthew 19:4-5; John 8:32; I Corinthians 6:9-11; Colossians 2:13-14; Hebrews 13:4
Let us do right, lest we lose God’s blessing and chose God’s wrath. “Kiss the Son, lest he be angry, and ye perish from the way, when his wrath is kindled but a little. Blessed are all they that put their trust in him.” (Psalm 2:12)
