Proverbs 18:13&15 says, “13He that answereth a matter before he heareth it, it is folly and shame unto him. 15The heart of the prudent getteth knowledge; and the ear of the wise seeketh knowledge.” We often think of these verses as saying that we should not come to a conclusion about something we hear before we investigate the matter further. We should find out the truth before we believe a story. That would be a good application, but this verse can apply to all areas of life. A look at the surrounding verses shows many subjects in the context – finances, labor, diligence, bribery, lifting up one’s self above a neighbor, offending a brother with the tongue (or by believing what was spoken by someone else’s tongue), settling matters between individuals, and even finding a wife. This advice from Scripture is applicable to all areas of life. Investigating a matter and taking time to learn what we can in order to make an informed decision brings blessing. Proverbs 16:20 says, “He that handleth a matter wisely shall find good: and whoso trusteth in the LORD, happy is he.”

My people ask counsel at their stocks, and their staff declareth unto them: for the spirit of whoredoms hath caused them to err, and they have gone a whoring from under their God. Hosea 4:12
