The prophecy came that the people of Judah and Jerusalem would be in a desperate condition. Because of their sin, God would judge them and pour out His wrath upon them. However, because of His covenant with them, God would not allow them to be completely destroyed.
We saw in verse eight of Isaiah chapter eight that the land of Israel is Immanuel’s land, “And he shall pass through Judah; he shall overflow and go over, he shall reach even to the neck; and the stretching out of his wings shall fill the breadth of thy land, O Immanuel.” The enemies of Judah and Jerusalem would come up against them and fill the land, but it is still Emmanuel’s land.
No matter what the enemies of Israel devised or schemed, or even if they joined together, God would protect His people. Verses nine and ten say, “9) Associate yourselves, O ye people, and ye shall be broken in pieces; and give ear, all ye of far countries: gird yourselves, and ye shall be broken in pieces; gird yourselves, and ye shall be broken in pieces. 10) Take counsel together, and it shall come to nought; speak the word, and it shall not stand: for God is with us.”
Why would God protect His chosen people Israel in this manner, even when they were rebellious against Him? Because of His covenant. Consider these verses from Jeremiah 33:19-22, “19) And the word of the LORD came unto Jeremiah, saying, 20) Thus saith the LORD; If ye can break my covenant of the day, and my covenant of the night, and that there should not be day and night in their season; 21) Then may also my covenant be broken with David my servant, that he should not have a son to reign upon his throne; and with the Levites the priests, my ministers. 22) As the host of heaven cannot be numbered, neither the sand of the sea measured: so will I multiply the seed of David my servant, and the Levites that minister unto me.” So far, no one has ever been able to break God’s covenant of day and night. Every twenty-four hours, we have daytime and we have nighttime. That means that God has not broken His covenant with Israel. One can see plainly from reading Romans chapters ten and eleven that God has not cast off His people and continues to keep His covenant and His mercy with Israel.
How we can praise the Lord because He keeps His promises and has not cast off His people, nor will He ever cast them off! We see through the years that, though they have gone through many trials and horrific situations, the Jewish people have been preserved. Since, we can see that God keeps His promises, we can trust in Him completely and know that He will always keep His word and He will never fail.
