Isaiah continues on with the lament for Lucifer and the proverb that Israel will take up against the king of Babylon. Though Lucifer had desired to be like the most High, to exalt his throne above the stars of God, to sit upon the mount of the congregation in the sides of the north, his highness and greatness would come to an end. Let us take a look.
“Yet thou shalt be brought down to hell, to the sides of the pit.” (Isaiah 14:15) Lucifer, whom we now know as Satan, will one day go to his own place, the place prepared for him and his angels. (See Matthew 25:41) Sadly, the king of Babylon, and all other people who choose to serve Satan will go to that place as well. They have chosen to do Satan’s work, and they will reap Satan’s wages.
The king of Babylon was exalted very high, yet, he would be brought very low. What would happen to him when he descended into hell? He would be mocked and derided, “16) They that see thee shall narrowly look upon thee, and consider thee, saying, Is this the man that made the earth to tremble, that did shake kingdoms; 17) That made the world as a wilderness, and destroyed the cities thereof; that opened not the house of his prisoners?” The king of Babylon would not even be honored in his death as other kings. The Bible says, “18) All the kings of the nations, even all of them, lie in glory, every one in his own house. 19) But thou art cast out of thy grave like an abominable branch, and as the raiment of those that are slain, thrust through with a sword, that go down to the stones of the pit; as a carcase trodden under feet. 20) Thou shalt not be joined with them in burial, because thou hast destroyed thy land, and slain thy people: the seed of evildoers shall never be renowned.” (Isaiah 14:18-20)
What a solemn reminder that a person who serves the devil will reap the devil’s harvest. That person may enjoy pomp and popularity and power for a season. But none of this can be taken with him when he dies. Indeed, “What shall it profit a man, if he shall gain the whole world, and lose his own soul?” (Mark 8:36) Choose Jesus and eternal life today. The fun and temporary pleasures of Satan’s way are not worth it.
