This was an urgent matter of prayer because these men needed grace and wisdom during such a trial. One of them was an older man, and a 9 hour ordeal in court was not easy on him. If I were in their case, I would certainly have wanted prayer as well. Also, it was an urgent matter of prayer because the outcome of this case has important implications for our freedoms in this country as Christians.
It is important to note that this is NOT a victory for a teacher’s right to pray in public schools. The issue at stake was that Pace High School had agreed to abstain from prayer or any other religious activity that would influence the students’ religious beliefs at any school function. Although this luncheon was not during school hours and was a privately sponsored luncheon, it was considered a school event and students were present. Therefore, this technically was considered a breech of the agreement and therefore contempt of court. The judge declared them “Not Guilty” because it could not be proven beyond a doubt that these men intentionally violated a court order. Therefore, they were not guilty of contempt of court. She said however, that such behavior is unacceptable in public schools and that any future incident would not be tolerated.
The two men now understand that they did (though unwittingly) violate a court agreement. The principal was asked, “Principal Lay, are you sorry that prayer took place in this incident?” He responded, “I’m not.” For more information, check out this website - http://www.weartv.com/newsroom/top_stories/videos/wear_vid_3968.shtml
Recently I posted a copy of one of George Washington’s prayers. It was a prayer for our country. It was interesting to see that he was not ashamed to pray in Jesus’ name in public. May God grant a return of our freedoms. And thank God for His mercy in this case. Thanks to all who prayed for these two men.
But as for me, I will come into thy house in the multitude of thy mercy: and in thy fear will I worship toward thy holy temple. Psalm 5:7
