Psalm 138:6 says, “Though the LORD be high, yet hath he respect unto the lowly: but the proud he knoweth afar off.” How high is the Lord? Psalm 113:3-6 says, “3) From the rising of the sun unto the going down of the same the LORD's name is to be praised. 4) The LORD is high above all nations, and his glory above the heavens. 5) Who is like unto the LORD our God, who dwelleth on high, 6) Who humbleth himself to behold the things that are in heaven, and in the earth!” Psalm 92:8 says, “Thou, LORD, art most high for evermore.” God is control of all the nations and His glory is above the heavens. He is so high that He has to humble Himself to see the things that are in heaven and in the earth. He is most high. There is none higher or greater than God.
Though the Lord is high and there is none greater than He, the Lord still considers and cares for the lowly. In Psalm 51:17 we read, “The sacrifices of God are a broken spirit: a broken and a contrite heart, O God, thou wilt not despise.” The words of Isaiah 51:15 show just how gracious God is with those who have humble hearts and those who have troubled hearts, “For thus saith the high and lofty One that inhabiteth eternity, whose name is Holy; I dwell in the high and holy place, with him also that is of a contrite and humble spirit, to revive the spirit of the humble, and to revive the heart of the contrite ones.”
Consider these verses which show the graciousness and kindness God bestows upon those who are humble and those in affliction.
Isaiah 66:1,2, “1) Thus saith the LORD, The heaven is my throne, and the earth is my footstool: where is the house that ye build unto me? and where is the place of my rest? 2) For all those things hath mine hand made, and all those things have been, saith the LORD: but to this man will I look, even to him that is poor and of a contrite spirit, and trembleth at my word.”
Psalm 68:4,5, “4) Sing unto God, sing praises to his name: extol him that rideth upon the heavens by his name JAH, and rejoice before him. 5) A father of the fatherless, and a judge of the widows, is God in his holy habitation.”
II Chronicles 33:12,13, “12) And when he was in affliction, he besought the LORD his God, and humbled himself greatly before the God of his fathers, 13) And prayed unto him: and he was intreated of him, and heard his supplication, and brought him again to Jerusalem into his kingdom. Then Manasseh knew that the LORD he was God.” Manasseh was such a wicked king that he had filled the land with innocent blood. Yet, God heard even Manasseh when he was willing to humble himself before God and pray to Him and when he besought the Lord his God. No matter how wicked a person is or what they might have done, God will still hear and have mercy and compassion on that person if they humble themselves before Him. What an encouragement that is! Psalm 130:3,4 says, “3) If thou, LORD, shouldest mark iniquities, O Lord, who shall stand? 4) But there is forgiveness with thee, that thou mayest be feared.” Do you need forgiveness? Just humble yourself before God. He is there waiting with open arms. No matter how evil your actions or thoughts might have been, it is not too evil for God to forgive.
The Lord will answer the prayer of the humble and deliver them. “17) The righteous cry, and the LORD heareth, and delivereth them out of all their troubles. 18) The LORD is nigh unto them that are of a broken heart; and saveth such as be of a contrite spirit.” (Psalm 34:17,18)
“He healeth the broken in heart, and bindeth up their wounds.” (Psalm 147:3)
“3) Blessed are the poor in spirit: for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. 4) Blessed are they that mourn: for they shall be comforted.” (Matthew 5:3,4)
“6) But he giveth more grace. Wherefore he saith, God resisteth the proud, but giveth grace unto the humble. 7) Submit yourselves therefore to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you. 8) Draw nigh to God, and he will draw nigh to you.” (James 4:6-8a)
There are no doubt many more such references, but these are just a few to give a taste of the goodness, mercy, forgiveness, and graciousness of God. God is high. There is none higher than God. But, oh, how much He cares for the lowly and the broken in heart. There is no God so kind as our God.
